Les Paul Died Today.

He was quite possibly the man who started it all. He invented the solid body electric guitar, invented the electric pickup, and as if that wasn't enough he invented multitrack recording. He even invented a way for studios to use reverb as an effect. Without these innovations the music we all know and love would been so different it would be unrecognizable. In fact it most likely wouldn't exist. Think about Sgt. Pepper with no multitrack recording, no overdubbing, and no reverb. Exactly. He was as much an inventor as a world class musician. In his prime he had 36 gold records and 11 number 1 hits. Thousands of budding guitarist have marveled at his flawless technic. His impact on modern music can not be understated. Without this great man music today would be in the stone age.

He passed away today at 94. I'll have more on his life later but in the meantime here's an interview he did on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross in 1992.

It Might Get Loud

I just saw the trailer for It Might Get Loud, a documentary about playing guitar I guess, and it looks like good fun. Even though I don't like Jack White I still want to see this movie. Just thought I'd share.

Shufflezine

Shuffezine is back! Now they just need to get on the ball and update/come out with a new issue. Yes I know their a quarterly, but is that really enough? Well I say no! I need more than that! But seriously, we're way past spring and well into summer now.

Now to the local Greenville monthy, Mixer. This month's issue has an interview with Brooklyn based band Motel Motel in which there is a very funny typo. Is seems that Kristen Day, the writer that conducted the interview, didn't understand that in music when someone refers to prog-(insert genre here) it means progressive and not Prague like the capital city of the Czech Republic. Normally I wouldn't point out this type of thing but isn't it the job of a journalist to ask questions and understand the answers given? Pretending to know something that you don't doesn't make you any cooler. Maybe Mixer should have put someone on the task who actually has some experience with music and knows these types of things. Perhaps their record reveiw writer Josh Humphries would have been a better choice than the girl who writes articals like Carson Parker struts the world-wide catwalk

New Destroyer EP

Destroyer, the band you either love or hate, has a new EP coming out titled Bay of Pigs on North Carolina's favorite label, Merge Records. It will hit record racks across the country August 18th and it will be available only on 12" vinyl, however it will come with a download code so you can listen to the 20+ minutes (side A being around 13 of those minutes) of new material wherever you like. You can pre-order it from the Merge Store and Stereogum is streaming the title track. (via Merge Records)

As a side note, Destroyer's official website is extremely out of date, the last post under the news section is about a spit 7" that came out on Record Store Day in April 2008.

Last Saturday Night (and yes I know I'm late with it)

Sorry for the lack of posting lately but It's taken me a while to recover from the insanely awesome show Saturday night (search for: "I know it's early but.." and "Show time in Greenville"). The bands brought down the house in what was possibly one of the best shows in Greenville history and definitely the best in recent memory! The Charming Youngsters opened and explained to us how things sound on Venus and all the ladies got up to dance during The Gospel Years set, which is funny since most of their songs involve wicked women. Because of these two killer sets, the crowd was perfect primed for Lonnie Walker, who were spot on all night. They ended with a grateful audience cheering for more and, in the first encore I've seen in Greenville, the band delivered. The night was perfect all the way around.

Headlines

King Khan and the BBQ Show will be releseing a new album November 3 called Invisible Girl and their myspace page has two infomercials promoting the new album. I'll go a step further than Pitchfork did and say don't bother with listening to them, just keep you eyes peeled for the album. It's sure to be fun as King Khan albums are but I don't know why they didn't release it mid-summer, during the height of BBQ/Grilling season. (via Pitchfork)

This next band was brought to my attention by Daniel Hammond, who surfs myspace like it's his job. Beatallica does mash ups of, you guessed it, The Beatles and Metallica. Now I know what your thinking but these songs are spot on, flawless even. But the thing I can't figure out is just how serious they take themselves. Whatever the case may be they're still a lot of fun and should get the award for best novelty band of the year.

Spoon has released live recordings from their 3 night stint at Stubb's in Austin for download in mp3 or FLAC. All 3 nights are available individually or as a packaged deal for $7 or $15 respectively for the mp3 versions and the FLAC files at $20 and $9. They're available at the Spoon Store now. (via Merge Records)

And in brief, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth: “I think blogs are for people who are neurotic about having to know everything about everything all the time". You can read the full interview and more opinions from SY, on things like facebook, here. (via TwentyFourBit)
